Commission work is so highly personally rewarding work as it sparks many creative ideas.
So don’t be shy about contacting me with your wishes and likes. Today for example I am starting on work for a lady in south Africa who wants “our look” rather than the bright sunshine colours of Africa,
Of course I still supply the biggest collection of Liberty lawn in strips, pieces, and sample pieces, I am collating them into colour way sets, my current favourite is “mistral” teamed with rigorously washed linen and cotton. I will have plenty of hexagons at the shows, in packs of 50 ALL DIFFERENT DESIGNS, with matching paper templates, I have recently acquired a new batch of classic pieces to do this, plus die cut shapes in hearts and leaves.
Keep watching here or on my “facebook” page for more bundles, fabrics, liberty tana lawn collections and all things different,
How about making a quilt top in a day!
A summer workshop is in the diary for June 28th and 29th 2014 to be held in the Olney centre where we have run our workshops before. There are 18 places available for each day and you can be a novice or expert. The cost is £49.50 per person for a day with teas, coffees, cakes and biscuits included. You will need a sewing machine, a small pair of scissors and some thread.
N.B. If you want to do two days then the weekend cost will be £85.00 a saving of £15.
I will have plenty of fabric bundles, wadding and backing to help you get your quilt started. on previous workshops we aim to get the quilts, sewn and basted, ready for hand quilting all going home with my happy guests.
To book your place either give me a call on ++0044 (0)1234 240881 or drop me an email to email@example.com and I will confirm your reservation or you can request a full prospectus with all the workshop details.
Olney has excellent bed and breakfast rooms available all within 100 yards of the Olney Centre so if you would like to make a week end of it just let me know. Olney has plenty to offer with shops and restaurants, great independents and a few high street names too.
I really look forward to meeting and sewing with you in June!
Please note I will not be at Duxford this November but will be at the Knit & Stitch show at Alexandra Palace, London between the 10th and 13th of October, so if you are coming please drop by.
I have a good lot of big 4m bundles, many pale but sprinkled with the strong “old Swedish” range amongst these are some of the softest “old blue strippy” packs I have been able to make for some time, a real treat to work with too.
The range of “forgotton flannels ” increased dramatically a month or so ago, so plenty of soft florals in pink and blue are available, why not give flannel a go it’s so rewarding. The range of Liberty pieces has also increased, new sample books in the larger size and packs of 4 pieces 7.5″ x 5.5″ in a myriad of colours and designs, a real opportunity to increase your Liberty library.
I also have a limited number of bags of hexagons with papers, not quite firsts but they do contain a superb range of designs ready to sew, plus the trimming bags , now in two sizes 1m or 2m by weight approximately and when there gone this will be the last of them!
The day at Eridge Park was huge fun last month with the theme being very pale and vintage as in the picture. After a short break I will pull together all the new packs for the Festival of Quilts, some old and some new colourways. Summer dresses, hot orange green whites etc. are all ready cut for rolling, plus some spicy greens and oranges. I am also experimenting with flat packs, it may be possible to see more of the fabric which I know is always preferable when you have a specific project in mind.
I have also made a number of small dolly quilts, these are useful samplers to show off a better range of the worn and washed colourways, very enjoyable to make and they don’t take up so much room to transport or display.
One is called “little little” as its a little quilt made up in little prints, and I have a very retro red while and blue version to show off a very limited number of bigger rolls in this colourway.
Please continue to email me with any your thoughts and ideas, my facebook page is always useful for regular updates so if you Facebook why not check in sometime.
The very talented Elena Thomas founder of LOAF (Life and Other Art Festival) has LOAF 13 coming up on July 6th and 7th in Stourbridge, I’ll be there! This link http://www.elenathomas.co.uk/events takes you to Elena’s’ blog with all the event details. I hope you all have a lovely summer too!
I am pleased to say that my next outing is to the Decorative Living Fair, May 15th in Kent (more details below) and I have made a special quilt top. Hopefully it will have some hand quilting by May.There are just 8 bundles available, £55.00 each, and the finished size is 50” x 70”. I also have a new batch of the “washday blues” quilt, which was very popular at the spring Knit and Stitch show at Olympia. A highlight of that show was being able to jump into a taxi in time for tea in Harrods….highly recommended, in the small balcony overlooking the food hall.
For anyone living locally, I will also be at the MK Handmade and Vintage Fair on June 1st and 2nd, in Middleton Hall, Milton Keynes.
Just head for John Lewis and its in the open space right in front of the main entrance to the store. A slightly different event but I will have bundles of fabric, Liberty lawn pieces with a vintage theme and all the bits and pieces.
I will be joined by Sonja of Sew Sonja fame who makes the delightful and exclusive angels using re claimed fabrics and trimmings plus other original wares.
There are plenty of bundles available by mail order, and we do have a huge amount of fabric in the pipeline for the Festival of Quilts , so any individual ideas can easily be achieved, just let me know. No hidden charges for the bespoke service, which includes pictures sent to you for your approval of my selections.
After that the next venture is The Festival of Quilts, two week earlier than usual in August (8th to 11th). There will be some new packs combining different sized pieces, but its still work in progress, so more news next month on this.
The Decorative Living Fair will be held on THURSDAY 16TH MAY, 2013 at Eridge Park on the borders of Kent and Sussex. Tickets are available to buy at http://carolinezoob.co.uk/shop/the-decorative-living-fair-tickets/
This now annual event is held at Eridge Park, a beautiful country estate on the borders of Kent and Sussex and has been run over the past six years by textile designer Caroline Zoob and antiques dealer Henrietta ‘Hetty’ Purbrick. Over the years they have discovered wonderful dealers selling a wide variety of antique, vintage and decorative contemporary goods. As always lots going on but hopefully I will get to meet you at one of these events over the next few months.
The cold weather means a lot of sewing is being done, and I have used the time to get some new ideas completed.
The “shirty “ range (copyright Kim Porter) is well under way I made the small quilt last year which includes button bands, cuff buttons and pockets and for this year I am making a bigger one with some new elements.
Lots of buttons , buttons on bands, and cuff plackets will be with me at Duxford, I think they add interest and texture to the quilt. It was inspired by a collection of shirts from Willen Hospice, which when washed and hanging on the line just said that they needed to stay together.
Another day during the Christmas break was spent indulging in just using anything to hand, in a very traditional pattern, 9 patch blocks, with squares. The fabrics include old shirts, Liberty lawn and Lifestyle, soft pin cord, and old denim, and some new fabrics given by a friend.. Featured in the centre are some small embroideries given to me by my daughter for Christmas, a whole boxful.
So far this year I plan to be at Duxford both the March and November dates and the NEC in August. But please get in touch in between if you would like something special, stocks are quite high, i.e nearly to the roof of the fabric shed so I think I can match most ideas.
